Who was the real Nageshwar Rao?
Known as the Robinhood of Stuartpuram by many, Nageswar Rao was often described as the daredevil thief who achieved cult pop culture status among Telugu people.
Born in Stuartpuram of Andhra Pradesh, a small settlement situated along the highway connecting Chennai and Kolkata, Nageswara Rao gained ‘popularity’ as a robber who tricked police officials for years. Nageshwar Rao, along with his friend Gajjala Prasad, initiated several robberies in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Their robberies included bank heists, jewelry thefts, and more. The duo was notorious for their inventive methods to conduct the robbery.
However, what made Nageshwar Rao special was the fact that he distributed a majority of his loot to the common folk. After being caught by the police, from a prison in Chennai jail, he was given the moniker of ‘Tiger.’ Even today, his photo hangs in front of the door of his house in Stuartpuram and is a well-known tourist spot. The thief was encountered by the police in 1987.
Tiger Nageswara Rao also marks the debut of Anupam Kher and Kriti Sanon’s sister Nupur Sanon in Telugu cinema.
