9 best dance apps for Android
Dancing is an art form and exercise we’ve been using for thousands of years. People do it on TikTok for likes, and some folks jazzercise to lose weight. Many dances are designed to convey many different emotions or move many body parts. There are simply too many to list. In terms of apps, there are some options. A real-life instructor will be better in almost all cases, but quick studies can find some dance moves on their phones without too much effort. Here are the best dance apps for Android.
We’d also like to give an honorable mention to Koros (Google Play). It has live interactive classes, and it’s easily one of the best. However, at $59.99 per month, it’s a difficult app to recommend, given how expensive it is. Still, those who don’t mind shelling out the funds will find a good experience there.
The best dance apps for Android
Body Groove
Price: Free / $13.99 per month / $99.99 per year
Body Groove is a dance workout app that teaches you how to dance and helps you lose weight. It features a variety of workout collections depending on what kind of dances you like to perform. The whole collection is available with the subscription, so you can use it whenever you want.
It’s a good dance app, especially for fitness purposes. It is a bit pricey, although we think the developers juiced up the monthly rate to encourage users to go yearly.
Dance Fitness with Jessica
Price: Free / $19.99 per month / $179.99 per year
Dance Fitness with Jessica is a different type of dance app. It’s the official app of the titular brand and brings the experience to mobile devices. Whether you like it or not is purely subjective, but there are a variety of workout routines and dance exercises to perform.
There are dances specifically for different types of workouts. For example, a weight loss dance is different from a toning dance. This one is one of the most expensive on the list, so make sure you really enjoy that free trial before signing up for real.
Everdance
Price: $17.99 per month
Everdance is an instructional dance app. It has lessons for everything from ballet to belly dancing, along with modern dances like twerk, hip-hop, k-pop, and others. Of course, you can get traditional stuff like salsa dancing as well. It’s a bit of a community platform. Teachers and schools can upload their courses directly to the app. Think of it like Udemy or Coursera but for dancing.
This one comes with a rather expensive monthly subscription, but there are quite a few classes to take. The only downside is that they don’t really let you see what the app is like before asking for a subscription. A demo version with a couple of introductory classes would go a long way here.
Hip Hop Dance
Price: Free / $1.49
Hip Hop Dance Workout is exactly what it sounds like. It teaches you how to dance a specific way, and then you do workouts with your new dance moves. It also helps with stuff like practice, footwork, and more. The only caveat is that it’s difficult to get into for beginners. Otherwise, it’s cheap and effective, and you’ll lose some weight and learn some dance moves with it.
Just Dance Now
Price: Free / $2.99 per month / $24.99 per year
Just Dance Now is technically a game, but it’s a game that teaches you how to dance. It uses actual pop songs that you probably know or have heard of before. It also ingeniously uses a Chromecast to function. You Chromecast the game to your TV and use your phone as a remote. From there, you copy the dance moves you see on your television.
The game has some stuff we don’t like. It has a coin-based energy system that prevents you from dancing as often as you want, and you can run out of coins rather quickly. In fact, it’s the game’s single biggest complaint. Other than that, the game teaches you to dance and is fun. It just requires some patience.
Pocket Salsa
Price: $4.99
Pocket Salsa is a pretty simple dance app. It has over 100 dance lessons to teach you the basics of salsa dancing. It includes every episode of Addicted2Salsa along with some salsa music tracks so you can practice. It’s a self-contained package, so you get all the video and music content for the app’s base price.
There isn’t much wrong with it outside of it not offering much for intermediate or advanced dancers. The lessons could be better organized, but otherwise, what you see is what you get.
Steezy
Price: Free / $19.99 per month / $99.99 per year
Steezy is another instructional dance app, and this one is quite popular. It houses over 800 dance courses across various genres such as hip-hop, k-pop, house, and more. The classes also range from beginner to expert, so a progression system is in place to keep you dancing and improving. Classes are shown as instructional videos, as you can see in the YouTube video above.
This is the most expensive monthly subscription on the list. However, this app also appears to be the most serious instructional app on the list, so it might actually be worth it. We recommend trying it out before committing long term.
YouTube
Price: Free / $12.99 per month
YouTube is an excellent choice for dancers on a budget. You can find thousands of instructional videos, tutorials, and dance fitness videos. It’s useful for learning a specific dance move, and some creators do classes and rely on YouTube ad revenue for income. In terms of pure educational value, the big draw here is that tutorials for new dances are up on YouTube long before they’re anywhere else.
YouTube is free to use, obviously, or you can pay $12.99 per month for YouTube Premium, which also comes with a YouTube Music subscription. The combination of the music and video service is particularly nice for people whose art medium requires music.
Any music streaming app
Price: Free / Varies
This is a bit of an obvious pick, but we’re making it anyway. You need music to dance, and thus, a music streaming service. Spotify is the obvious pick for its popularity, but you can use any streaming service. Most artists upload to every available service on a new song launch so you can dance to the latest hits on virtually all of them.
Additionally, SoundCloud provides excellent tunes by underground artists you might not find on the mainstream stuff. These are all just ideas. You’ll know which ones are right for you when you try them.
